FOUR CHARGED WITH MULTIPLE OFFENCES IN ATTAWAPISKAT FIRST NATION

Date of Release: February 15, 2022

(Attawapiskat, ON) On February 12th, 2022, members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) Drug Enforcement Unit, the NAPS Emergency Response Team (ERT) and NAPS Attawapiskat Detachment, executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) search warrant in the First Nation community of Attawapiskat. As a result of the investigation, four (4) adults were arrested and charged with sixteen (16) CDSA and Criminal Code (CC) charges with a substantial amount of drugs and currency seized.

The following people were charged:

J. HOOKIMAW, G. KOOSTACHIN, N. KOOSTACHIN and G. KOOSTACHIN were each released on conditions and scheduled to appear on April 28th, 2022 for court in Attawapiskat, Ontario.

NAPS EXECUTES DRUG WARRANT IN SANDY LAKE FIRST NATION

Date of Release: February 11, 2022

(Sandy Lake, ON) On January 26, 2022, the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) Drug Enforcement Unit, as a result of an investigation under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, had executed two search warrants at a residence located in Sandy Lake First Nation. Two adults were charged and various amounts of drugs and currency were seized.

Police seized Cocaine, Suboxone, two firearms, and approximately eleven thousand two-hundred seventy ($11,270.00) dollars in Canadian currency.

42 year-old Ronald MCPHERSON was charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Cocaine Section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act; Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000.00 of the Criminal Code; and, 2 counts of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm Section 91(1) of the Criminal Code.

37 year-old Krista FIDDLER was charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Cocaine Section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act; and, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000.00 of the Criminal Code

Both Ronald MCPHERSON and Krista FIDDLER have been released on conditions and will next attend court in Sandy Lake on April 4, 2022.

FATAL RESIDENTIAL FIRE UNDER INVESTIGATION IN SANDY LAKE FIRST NATION

Date of Release: January 14, 2022

(Sandy Lake, ON) A fatal residential fire that occurred in the early morning hours of January 14, 2022 is currently under investigation by the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service North West Region Crime Unit.

The Ontario Fire Marshal and the Ontario Provincial Police Identification Unit are both assisting with the investigation.

NAPS EXECUTES TWO DRUG SEARCH WARRANTS IN CAT LAKE FIRST NATION

Date of Release: Wednesday, December 8, 2021

(Cat Lake, ON) On November 24, 2021, members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police (NAPS) Intelligence Unit, the NAPS Emergency Response Team and the Cat Lake Uniform Detachment Members executed two Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) search warrants in the First Nation community of Cat Lake.

During the search of two residences, officers seized a large quantity of drugs suspected to be Methamphetamine, Cocaine and Oxycodone.

As a result of the investigation, Curtis SAKAKEESIC, 28 years of age, Sierra WESLEY, 26 years of age, Christopher SAKAKEESIC, 27 years of age and John SAKAKEESIC, 57 years of age, all from Cat Lake First Nation, were arrested and each were charged with the following:

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine, contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine, contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance – Oxycodone, contrary to Sec. 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5000, contrary to Sec. 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

All four accused were subsequently released on conditions and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on March 15, 2022 in Cat Lake, ON.

EABAMETOONG FIRST NATION MAN CHARGED AFTER COCAINE SUBSTANCE SEIZED BY NAPS

(Fort Hope, ON) On October 20, 2021, Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) Eabametoong Detachment (Fort Hope Detachment) members along with the NAPS Intelligence Unit Detectives, conducted an investigation of drug trafficking into the First Nation community of Eabametoong.

As a result of the investigation, police seized approximately sixty (60) grams of suspected cocaine.

Mathew SLIPPERJACK of Eabametoong First Nation was arrested and charged with Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and two counts of Fail to Comply with a Release Order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

SLIPPERJACK remains in custody and will appear in bail court scheduled for October 21, 2021.

(Marten Falls, ON) On July 26, 2021, members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police (NAPS) Intelligence Unit, the NAPS Drug Enforcement Unit, the NAPS Emergency Response Team and the Marten Falls Uniform Detachment Members executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) search warrant in the First Nation community of Marten Falls.

During the search, officers seized a large quantity of drugs suspected to be Crack Cocaine and Suboxone.

As a result of the investigation, Jennifer BAXTER, 47 years of age, and Jack PENAGIN, 42 years of age, both from Marten Falls First Nation were arrested and charged with the following:

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Buprenorphine contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance – Oxycodone contrary to Sec. 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Both Accused were subsequently released on conditions and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on December 15, 2021 in Marten Falls, ON.

17 NEW POLICE OFFICERS WELCOMED BY NISHNAWBE ASKI POLICE SERVICE

(Thunder Bay, ON) On Thursday, May 27, at 10:00 a.m., Chief of Police Roland Morrison will be presenting Nishnawbe Aski Police Service badges to 17 new police officers.

The presentation ceremony will be joined by Nishnawbe Aski Police Service Board member Zach Tait, remarks of encouragement from Chief Morrison and Acting Deputy Chief Brad Duce.

The graduating police officers are Constables Aaron Cooper, Sam Couce, Danyle Copetti, Peter Franken, Dillon Lever, Tyler Moskalyk, Brendan Myre, Zach Nixon, Autumn Olsen, Carlos Panetta, Matt Quesnel-Lafontaine, Abby Tabachak, Ezatollah Teimuri, Sarellah Teimuri, and Rocky Turtle. CDSA TRAFFICKING CHARGES RESULT FROM TRAFFIC STOP

Date of Release: February 1, 2021

(Constance Lake, ON) On January 29, 2021, members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police (NAPS) Intelligence Unit, the NAPS Drug Enforcement Unit and the NAPS Constance Lake Uniform Detachment Members conducted an investigation of drug trafficking to the First Nation community of Constance Lake.

As a result of the investigation a traffic stop was initiated, where 2 occupants were arrested and charged. Police seized 412 Methamphetamine Pills, 17 Hydromorphone Pills, 3 Oxycodone Pills and .5 grams Cocaine. The total northern street value of the seizure is approximately five thousand, five hundred and thirty five ($5,535.00) dollars.

Gordie ACHNEEPINESKUM, 32 years of age and Shawn ACHNEEPINESKUM, 35 years of age, both of Constance Lake First Nation were arrested and charged with the following:

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Hydromorphone contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance – Oxycodone contrary to Sec. 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

NAPS SEIZES LARGE QUANTITIES OF METHAMPHETAMINE AND OXYCODONE IN FORT ALBANY FIRST NATION

Date of Release: September 20, 2020

(Fort Albany, ON) On September 16, 2020, members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police (NAPS) Intelligence Unit, the NAPS Drug Enforcement Unit and the Fort Albany Uniform Detachment Members conducted an investigation of drug trafficking to the First Nation community of Fort Albany.

As a result of the investigation Police seized 1,502 Methamphetamine Pills, 292 Oxycodone Pills and a Fentanyl Patch. The total northern street value of the seizure is approximately one hundred and nineteen thousand, three hundred and twenty ($119,320.00) dollars.

As a result of the investigation, Peter Jeffrey WILLIAMS, 29 years of age, of Fort Albany First Nation was arrested and charged with the following:

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Oxycodone contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance – Fentanyl contrary to Sec. 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

• Failure to comply with Undertaking contrary to Sec. 145(4)(a) of the Criminal Code.

During the search, officers seized a large quantity of drugs suspected to be Methamphetamine, Cocaine and Fentanyl.

As a result of the investigation, James FARIES, 51 years of age, of Moose Factory First Nation was arrested and charged with the following:

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Fentanyl contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

FARIES was subsequently released on conditions and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on September 1, 2020, in Moosonee, Ontario.

VEHICLE STOP LEADS TO METHAMPHETAMINE SEIZURE IN KASHECHEWAN FIRST NATION

Date of Release: June 30, 2020

(Kashechewan, ON) On June 26, 2020, Nishnawbe Aski Police (NAPS) Kashechewan Uniform Detachment Members conducted a vehicle stop for a male that was wanted by police. During the vehicle stop, officers observed a large amount of currency throughout the vehicle. Further investigation resulted in officers locating a pill bottle containing Methamphetamine pills.

Police seized 451 Methamphetamine Pills and twenty four thousand sixty-two ($24,062.00) dollars in Canadian currency. The total northern street value of the seizure is approximately forty two thousand one hundred ($42,100.00) dollars.

As a result of the investigation, Chris WESLEY, 35 years of age, Adam WESLEY, 36 years of age, and Kenny WYNNE, 37 years of age of Kashechewan First Nation were arrested and charged each with the following:

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5000 contrary to Sec. 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

Two of the individuals were subsequently released on conditions and will next appear in court on August 20, 2020 in Kashechewan. The third individual was remanded into custody on previous charges.

NAPS SEIZES METHAMPHETAMINE IN FORT ALBANY FIRST NATION

Date of Release: June 25, 2020

(Fort Albany, ON) On June 21, 2020, members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police (NAPS) Intelligence Unit, the NAPS Drug Enforcement Unit, the NAPS Emergency Response Team and the Fort Albany Uniform Detachment Members executed multiple Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) search warrants in the First Nation community of Fort Albany. The warrants were executed as part of an ongoing investigation that resulted in a large seizure of Methamphetamine and Canadian Currency with three people being charged.

Police seized 3279.5 Methamphetamine Pills, 25.4 grams of Methamphetamine Powder and twenty one thousand, two hundred and ninety five ($21,295.00) dollars in Canadian Currency. The total northern street value of the seizure is approximately one hundred and fifty five thousand, eight hundred and sixty one ($155,861.00) dollars.

As a result of the investigation, Robin SUTHERLAND, 36 years of age, and Sharon KNAPAYSWEET, 28 years of age, of Fort Albany First Nation were arrested and charged each with the following:

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5000 contrary to Sec. 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

Margaret WILLIAMS, 32 years of age, also of Fort Albany First Nation was arrested and charged with the following:

• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine contrary to Sec. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5000 contrary to Sec. 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

All three individuals were subsequently released on conditions and will next appear in court on October 21, 2020 in Fort Albany.

NAPS INVESTIGATE FATAL PEDESTRIAN & MOTOR VEHICLE INCIDENT IN FORT ALBANY FIRST NATION

Date of Release: May 16, 2020

(Fort Albany, ON) In the early hours of Saturday, May 16, 2020, the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service in Fort Albany First Nation attended the scene of a male adult pedestrian and motor vehicle incident.

The ambulance services were also at the scene and the victim was rushed to medical care but had succumbed to injuries.

The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service Crime Unit is currently investigating this incident with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police.

This investigation is still ongoing and further updates will be released as they become available.

OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING IN FORT SEVERN FIRST NATION

Date of Release: May 1, 2020

(Fort Severn, ON) On Thursday, April 30, 2020, in the First Nation Territory of Fort Severn, an officer-involved shooting occurred with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) Fort Severn Detachment.

An adult male had engaged in a life-threatening altercation with a NAPS officer who had responded with the discharging of a police-issued firearm. The adult male was injured by the firearm and had fled the scene.

The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police Emergency Response Teams assisted in locating and taking the adult male into police custody and transported to the nursing station. The adult male has since been transported out of Fort Severn First Nation with serious but stable injuries.

Nishnawbe Aski Police have initiated an investigation into the matter and have sought the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police to investigate the actions of the officers. From this point, updates regarding the actions of the officers will be released by the Ontario Provincial Police.

NAPS SEIZES CRACK COCAINE IN NORTH SPIRIT LAKE FIRST NATION

Date of Release: February 18, 2020

(North Spirit Lake, ON)  On February 15, 2020, a search warrant was executed under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act by the Nishnawbe Aski Police (NAPS) Intelligence Unit, the NAPS Drug Enforcement Unit, the NAPS Emergency Response Team and the North Spirit Lake Detachment Uniform Members in the First Nation community of North Spirit Lake.  The warrant was executed as part of an ongoing investigation and resulted in several people being charged.

Police seized pre-packaged Crack Cocaine along with approximately three thousand fifty ($3.050.00) dollars in Canadian Currency.  The total northern street value of the drugs was approximately nine thousand six-hundred fifty ($9.650.00) dollars.

A 19 year-old female from North Spirit Lake was charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, Possession of the Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime, and three counts of Fail to Comply with a Recognizance.

A 24 year-old female from Peguis, Manitoba was charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking and Possession of the Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime.

A 31 year-old female from North Spirit Lake was charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking and Possession of the Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime.

A 54 year-old male from North Spirit Lake was charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking and Possession of the Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime.

All four individuals were subsequently released on conditions and will next appear in court on August 31, 2020 in North Spirit Lake.

CRACK COCAINE SEIZED IN NORTH SPIRIT LAKE FIRST NATION

Date of Release: January 12, 2020

(North Spirit Lake, ON) On January 11, 2020, as part of an investigation a warrant was executed in North Spirit Lake First Nation by the Nishnawbe Aski Police (NAPS) Drug Enforcement Unit, NAPS Guns and Gangs Unit, NAPS Criminal Intelligence Unit, NAPS North Spirit Lake Detachment members, along with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau and the Thunder Bay Police Service Drug Enforcement Unit. As a result, drugs and cash were seized and three people were charged.

Police seized a large quantity of Crack Cocaine along with four thousand four hundred ($4,400.00) dollars in currency. The street value of the seized drugs and currency totals approximately fifty-three thousand two-hundred ($53,200.00) dollars.

An adult male and two adult females are each charged with one count of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000.00 and one count of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking. All three have been released from custody on conditions and will next appear in court in North Spirit Lake First Nation on August 8, 2020. The three cannot be named at this time due to the processing of court documents.

FORT ALBANY POLICE SEIZE $110,160 IN ILLEGAL DRUGS

(Fort Albany, ON) On November 15, 2019, Nishnawbe Aski Police Service members from the Fort Albany Detachment charged one adult female under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act following the seizure of illegal drugs.

Police seized a large amount of Percocet pills and a large quantity of Cocaine with a combined street value of approximately one hundred ten thousand one hundred sixty ($110,160.00) dollars.

A 25 year-old female from Sudbury, Ontario was charged with two counts of Possession of a Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking. The adult female has been released on conditions and will next appear in court on January 29, 2020, in Fort Albany First Nation. The female cannot be named at this time due to the processing of court documents.

NAPS POLICE CHARGE FORMER FORT SEVERN BAND MANAGER IN FRAUD INVESTIGATION

(Fort Severn, ON) On July 12, 2019, Nishnawbe Aski Police Service members from the Fort Severn Detachment conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle. The initial traffic stop investigation led police into a detailed investigation and as of October 23, 2019, a former band manager now faces several fraud charges.

The investigation directed police to a number of separate incidents that occurred over a number of years supporting fraudulent activity which amounted between twenty-five thousand and two hundred fifty thousand ($25,000.00 and $250,000.00) dollars.

A 51 year-old male from Fort Severn First Nation was charged with two counts of Fraud Over $5000 and one count of Breach of Trust. The male has been released on conditions and will next appear in court on February 10, 2020, in Fort Severn First Nation. The male cannot be named at this time due to the processing of court documents.

Fort Severn First Nation is approximately 850 km north of Thunder Bay and 715 km northeast of Red Lake.

ATTAWAPISKAT OFFICERS SEIZE $ 27,000.00 IN METHAMPHETAMINE

(Attawapiskat, ON) On Tuesday, November 26, 2019, Nishnawbe Aski Police Service members from the Attawapiskat Detachment charged one adult male under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act following the seizure of illegal drugs.

Police seized a large amount of Methamphetamine pills with a street value of approximately twenty-seven thousand ($27,000.00) dollars.

A 19 year-old male from Attawapiskat First Nation was charged with Possession of a Substance. The adult male has been released on conditions and will next appear in court on January 22, 2020, in Attawapiskat First Nation. NAPS DRUG UNIT MAKES $42,980 SEIZURE IN MOOSE FACTORY FIRST NATION

(Moose Factory, ON) On June 1, 2019, Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) Drug Enforcement Unit with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, NAPS Emergency Response Team, OPP Moosonee Detachment & Marine Unit, and the members of the NAPS Moose Factory Detachment, executed two drug warrants under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act which resulted in two persons being charged and a seizure of several illegal substances. Another male was also arrested in an unrelated arrest warrant.

The drug warrant execution resulted in police seizing various amounts of Fentanyl, Cocaine, MDMA (Methylenedioxymethamphetamine), Crystal Methamphetamine, Methamphetamine, Oxycodone, and Hydromorphone. Police also seized approximately eighteen thousand ($18,000.00) dollars in Canadian currency. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is approximately twenty-four thousand nine-hundred eighty ($24,980.00) dollars.

A 24 year-old female from Toronto was charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000.00 and six counts of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking. The female was released on conditions and will appear in court on August 6, 2019 in Moosonee, Ontario.

A 38 year-old male from Moose Factory was charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000.00 and six counts of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking. The male was released on conditions and will appear in court on August 6, 2019 in Moosonee, Ontario.

A 25 year-old male was found in at the location who was wanted for Robbery by the OPP Orillia Detachment. The male was turned over to the OPP and remained in custody pending a bail hearing.
